What are immigration physicals?

An immigration physical is required of anyone who wants to become a legal, permanent resident of the United States — also known as acquiring their green card. Everyone applying for a green card must receive an immigration physical as part of the process.

Immigration physicals prove that you meet specific health standards and don’t have health challenges such as:

  • Infectious diseases like syphilis, tuberculosis, and gonorrhea
  • Drug addiction or misuse
  • Physical or mental health disorders associated with harmful behavior

If your provider finds you have any of these conditions, you do not pass the immigration physical.

How do I prepare for an immigration physical?

Your first step is collecting available medical records, including blood tests, preventive screenings, and diagnostic images. Bring these to your appointment along with your identification and any forms you need filled out.

Be certain to bring any medical records if you were previously treated for tuberculosis or other infectious diseases.

Do immigration physicals include immunizations?

If you have medical records that verify your immunizations are up-to-date, you won’t need any during your physical.

But, if you don’t have written confirmation or previous immunizations, your provider at Vie Medical Center will order them. You must have all of your immunizations prior to receiving your green card.

If you need multiple doses of immunizations, you will receive the first ones at your immigration physical. Your provider can sign your medical report after giving the first round, but you must follow up to receive the full dosages.

What is it like to get an immigration physical?

An immigration physical begins with a review of your medical history, including any current conditions or symptoms. You’ll also be asked about prior illnesses, disabilities, drug or alcohol use, hospitalizations, or inpatient care for physical or mental health conditions.

Your provider performs a complete physical exam and assessment of your mental health. You’ll also provide a urine sample. Depending on your case, you may require additional diagnostic tests to check for tuberculosis or other health problems.
